New Mix — Deep House Brazil
I feel a bit ashamed I haven’t posted my new mix on my own website yet and it’s already been out for a month, so I apologize! But here it is — Deep House Brazil. I wanted to capture a particular essence that would serve to transcend many different environments/settings, and I think the execution was a beautiful translation. I will go into the mix below.
First, there’s a distinct story line about a woman from Europe who becomes fascinated with Brazil — and takes the trip of her life. In an attempt to convey this motif, I wanted to infuse warm, beachy house with soulful, liquid textures, underlined by Brazilian and Bossa percussives. The current deep house trend seems to lend an ear to dry bass, dark minimal themes, and heavy tech influences. This was not going to work for my vision, so I had to dig deep and rewind back to 2008 when the deep house movement was more inline with soulful influences. In doing so I found a gold mine of forgotten/undiscovered jewels in the raw.
Also, by now you have probably heard the comment or read somewhere in some publication (online or print) that electronic music is not considered music in the classical sense, and it is not justified to call electronic music producers “musicians” as they merely manipulate a rack instead of play actual instruments. Deep House Brazil is a mix that serves to shatter that perspective. The DJs producing the music in this mix are incredibly talented and trained musicians — from various brass instruments, to the piano, to flutes and woodwinds, to keyboards, guitar, and Brazilian drums — not only do these musicians lay down beautiful breaks and instrumental stanzas, but the improvisations in solos and shifts in musical structure in encore drops are nothing short of captivating.
Lastly, I wanted to create a summer mix that was suitable and highly versatile for different settings. Whether it be a morning cup of coffee in the sun, a lazy afternoon on the terrace by the pool, a sunset with a mojito, a midday beach cruise, a trip out on the lake in a boat, a dinner date and drinks at a lounge or cafe, or late night chill out session, I believe Deep House Brazil fits the bill on all of these instances and more. I hope you enjoy listening to this mix as much as I enjoyed creating it.
